Am I guilty of the sin of “Sodom”?

Have you come across one of those passages recently that made you stop, think and ask yourself some hard questions? I have. Just this morning, I read this passage in the book of Ezekiel (somewhat obscure book in the Bible) and wondered just how much the truths found within apply to me. And even more striking, is the comparison to the sin of Sodom. I find myself pondering the reality that God really does have a very special place in His heart for the poor and needy, and wondering if the same is true for me . . .

Ezekiel 16:49 (New American Standard Bible)

49"Behold, this was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had arrogance, abundant food and careless ease, but she did not help the poor and needy.”
While I would probably not think of myself as one having “careless ease” necessarily, I definitely live in a state of careless ease compared to most people, especially the women leaders we serve in the “hard places”.

As for arrogance, that’s another topic altogether. Only the Lord sees my heart and motives clearly. So, I’ll take this chance to ask Him to give me a heart check on just where I land on the arrogance/humility heart-check barometer!

Helping (or grasping the hand of, as stated in the original Hebrew language) the poor and needy, continues to be my passion. But when I honestly examine my life in light of this passage, I see that I have a bit of growing to do . . . truth be known, quite a lot.

So now it’s your turn. How does this verse impact your life? And what kind of growing would you like to do in light of its truths?

We’d love to hear from you!
