How would you respond to the above statement? While here in India, one of our cab drivers told us just how he felt about his car. As you can imagine, our hearts sank as we thought of just how his wife must be treated, and how desperate and forlorn she must feel.
This is just a tiny picture into a culture (this is true of MANY cultures worldwide) where women's value is degraded on many levels. You can see that this must be addressed carefully and prayerfully. Perhaps the very best approach is to teach men and women just what the Bible says about women from the start. She, too, is created in the image of God. Among other things, she must see herself as incredibly value to God and mankind. After all, man is literally and relationally incomplete without her. The narrative accounts of Adam and Eve, Abigail and David, Ruth and Boaz, Hannah and Elkanah, to mention just a few, demonstrate the intelligence, beauty, and spirituality of women and our intrinsic value.
This continues in the life and times of Christ and even to this very day. It has been my joy to see great men around the world recognize this for themselves. As such, they offer hope to women and become culture-shapers for entire communities.
In this environment, women are released to demonstrate the strength of their femininity, along with its beauty and grace.
So, back to our cab driver . . . What would you say?
I look forward to hearing from you and sharing how one of my Indian women friends responded.
